Shelly 张 lives and works in Michigan. Their print and book work primarily focuses on US personal identification documents; their sculptural work, nets and hair.
Documents: Thematically, I’m interested in exploring the individual as they are fetishized by state-issued documents. To this end, I'm also interested in the material intersection between artistic printmaking and document security.
Nets: Structurally, I’m drawn to the capability of a net to be both full of shape and formless as it responds to ever-changing states of tension.
Hair: I have an ongoing commitment to utilise my own hair materially in sculptural work.
